The COVID-19 pandemic has played a huge role in the last 6 months in how PWA has had to operate in 2020. Having rarely hosted little to no online events, the current environment has forced us to move all activities online!
Making this transition has not been easy, however, it was essential to keep our PWA community connected but also safe during this time of uncertainty.
In order to stay connected, PWA has hosted monthly member network meetings. These meetings have provided a space for members to talanoa on various topics, hear from service providers, share what is happening in our own spaces and discuss ways to better assist our Maori & Pasifika communities in Brisbane during this time. Commencing in March 2020, we have now hosted 4 network meetings with a variety of themes online via ZOOM with a number of fantastic guest speakers who are part of our PWA community.
Below are snippets from our PWA Members Network Meetings:
March – Mental health & wellbeing (Guest speakers: Hanan Al-Alawneh, Suicide Prevention Project & Reema Naresh, Wellness Consultant)
– – –
April – Young women in leadership (Guest speakers: Esmeralda Lo Tam, Ei8ht Sports & Fiona Rowaro, Life Communities)
– – –
May – Does social media empower women? (Guest Speaker: Cassaundra Rangip, Founder of the Pacific Fashion Festival)
– – –
June – Climate leadership as members of the Pasifika diaspora (Guest speaker: Mary Harm, 350 Pacific – Pacific Climate Warriors Brisbane Coordinator)
Being a first for PWA, this virtual experience was a necessary reminder of the importance of staying connected. Furthermore, these meetings have highlighted the strength of our communities as well as the privilege we have in accessing online tools and resources, a challenge that is experienced throughout the Pacific.
We thank all our members who have participated in these meetings over the last 5 months. We look forward and will continue to host our events online until further notice.
